So, a decade later, I returned to this spot and the people who use the land have decimated the tree. She is no more, she is dead, gone, destroyed. The roots were cut, I imagine the tree then drowned. The were fishing in a filthy pond that was once pure clear water. This tree was hundreds of years old. The last of her kind on that mountain my ancestors called home.
